RNLI Fires Maroon Rockets for the Last Time!
The age-old tradition of firing maroon rockets to alert the RNLI Lifeboat crew at Dun Laoghaire came to an end on 25th Nov 2007.
To mark the occasion, which coincided with the launch of their new website, a textbook demonstration rescue was carried out by the local RNLI in Dun Laoghaire Harbour to the delight and admiration of cheering crowds gathered on East Pier.
Earlier, volunteer victim Eoin Hughes had 'fallen' overboard from the yacht
Orna (Orna Skipper Philip Dilworth holding hand-held flare). After the alarm was raised, two maroon rockets were fired for the last time from the lifeboat station. A 'Trent' Class All-Weather Lifeboat ALB No. 14-06 was launched and young Eoin was soon pulled from the sea by its volunteer crew. Afterwards, the ALB carried out a simulated rescue of a yacht in distress by towing Orna back to the shore.
The inshore 'D' class RNLI Lifeboat ILB D-565 also put on a display.
In future, electronic pagers will be used to warn the lifeboat crews.

The more observant among you will notice the relief Trent Class ALB Lifeboat No. 14-06 used in the demonstration is not the lifeboat permanently stationed at Dun Laoghaire - the Anna Livia. The Anna Livia, Lifeboat No. 14-05 (also a 'Trent' class ALB) is presently undergoing an extensive re-fit.

The action begins in earnest!
If you were there on the 11 Nov 2007 for the 2nd race of Dublin Bay Sailing Club's Turkey Shoot 2007, you know already there was plenty of wind, plenty of action and no shortage of incidents! New boats and old rivalries were on show as Another Adventure - IRL 3511, RIYC (Archambault 35) is involved in a close race to the finish with Grand Cru - IRL 1030, RIYC, CNB64.

Question: When is a 'Lift-out' not a 'Lift-out'?

Becalmed!
Sunday 04 Nov 2007 saw the start of this year's Dublin Bay Sailing Club annual Turkey Shoot. The event continues to grow in popularity - over 80 boats have entered the event.
Weather for the first race was a tad too good! Lack of wind led to the abandonment of the race after about an hour's racing. However, the disappointment on the water was soon forgotten at the Royal Irish Yacht Club where an impressive welcome reception was provided for all competitors.

Thanks to race sponsors Viking Marine, Hardy's Wines, O'Brien Press, Windmill Leisure and MGM Marine, organisers Dublin Bay Sailing Club and venue hosts the RIYC.
